World’s most interesting building projects

There is currently a renaissance in skyscraper design with cities vying to have the World’s Tallest Building or at least the most interesting looking. Here are 10 images of planed mega-architecture projects. While some look like fantasy projects, all are currently under way or are set to break ground this year.

Chicago Spire

Chicago Spire, Chicago, US

Formerly known as the Fordham Spire and 400 North Lake Shore Drive this design will be the tallest building in North America when it is completed in 2010. At 2000 feet it will be the first building to reach that milestone in height.
Trump Tower

Trump Tower, Dubai

What do you get when you mix the Donald and the Middle East’s most exciting city? Welcome to the Trump International Hotel and Tower. Located on one of the mile long man made palm islands this 48 storey building will be finished in 2009.

The man with the strange hair sure knows how to get things built. His latest project on one of Chicago’s most famous corners is already underway and will ready for the firings in 2009.
Lighthouse Tower

Lighthouse Tower, Paris, France

The Tom Mayne designed Phare Tour will rival the Eiffel Tower in height. The odd but eco friendly design will be completed in 2012 in the La Defense district of the French capital.
Freedom Tower

Freedom Tower, New York, US

Rising from the wreckage of the World Trade Centre, the Freedom Tower will return New York to the forefront of skyscraper design. After a long time in getting the project started the single tower will be finished in 2011 and will reach 1,776 feet high.
Burj

Burj, Dubai

Dubai is where is at architecturally these days. The crown will be the Burj. When completed it will the tallest building in the world by a long shot. The lead architect is Adrian Smith of the Chicago’s Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Its final height is a secret but it is believed will be 808 metres (2651 feet) high.
20 Fenchurch Street

20 Fenchurch Street, London, UK

This interesting building project planned for the City of London has been dubbed the ‘Walkie Talkie Building.’ The curvy project is designed to make use of solar power and be remarkably study.
Shard London Bridge

Shard London Bridge, London, UK

When completed in 2009 it will be the tallest building on the London Skyline, dwarfing all other projects for the foreseeable future. Designed by famed Italian architect Renzo Piano, the glass pyramid will rise 1016 feet into the London clouds.
Gazprom Tower

Gazprom Tower, St Petersburg, Russia

Already controversial, this 300m tall tower will dwarf the architecture of this Russian city. The world’s largest oil company plans to have the tower built by 2010.
Canadian Museum of Human Rights

Canadian Museum of Human Rights, Winnipeg, Canada

Following the experiences of Bilbao and Valencia, this Canadian city hopes to draw tourists to an architecturally significant project. This museum, designed by Antoine Predock is slated to be opened by 2009.
